SOunds like you need to reinstall itunes or try on another computer, its not detecting the phone correctly

Try turn the phone off as normal, plug in the cable, then follow from step 2 onwards. are you sure its a 3gs, i know 3g dont do DFU.

Are you sure your'e doing the DFU steps rights timing is critical
