Anyone else notice it doesnt look HD quality? When compared to coronation street....Eastenders looks nothing more than upscaled SD, now I have read somewhere that BBC were told to ofcom to start using HD to its max but I still dont think they are.

Is BBC1 running some shows in HD now? Was watching something the other day and the picture looked pretty good - think it was the end of Eastenders actually...

I thought it looked quite good, but then I don't have a particularly new HD telly.

Both BBC & ITV are running at resolutions of 1440 x 1080 interlaced to save bandwidth.

The BBC WERE also running their encoders at a fixed 9.7mbps although they have recently changed it to a stat muxed 18mbps over two channels (meaning that 18mbps is shared and whichever needs more bandwidth for a partiucular frame or series of frames will get it at the expense of the other channel).

The 1440px pic is then stretched to 1920px (in the case of Full HD) so for every three pixels of data horizintally it is displayed over four pixels (think 33% horizontal upscaling) much in the same way as anamorphic DVDs were displayed.

The bottom line is that the pic quality on the BBC is pretty substandard compared to other channels due to poor encoder spec, limited bandwidth and limited resolution.

Check out the full BBC (from December 2009) explanation and the hundrends of comments that follow here ....

Makes sense as some scenes looked sharper than others!! I thought some were filmed in HD and some were just upscaled but your explanation makes sense. Thats typical off the BBC, we pay a license fee here in UK and what do we get, shit quality picture and wanky tv programs from them, ITV HD is really good compared to BBC one HD

itv 1 hd Granada and central are 1920x1080i
itv 1 hd London and Meridian are 1440x1080i all fixed at 10mbit which isnt enough for quality HD

bbc hd's 1440x1080i VBR is even worse as its not variable enough, they think they can run a HD service with those bitrates :(

Enders started in HD on Christmas Day. I wouldnt watch it in any res. Onlt thing i watch is Top Gear on BBC HD, same crappy bit rates as BBC one HD :(

when theres not much happing ITV1 HD can look good as the fixed 10mbit is enough to hold the picture together.

Im paying the BBC a 145 quid a year for a dozen episodes of Top Gear in piss poor HD.
Get this, The Scandinavian version of BBC HD picture quality, is better than our version :pissed:

I thought Eastenders was going proper HD in January
tigro 29.12.2010, 06:38
It already has, but qualityis shit, the uk tv license is one big rip off joke, I feel like complaining to ofcom but it wouldnt get us anywhere, would need millions of phone calls before anything was done, the sooner the tv license is scrapped the better.
