Possy_99 24.12.2010, 00:33 bog standard cable router will do the job.. your over complicating things. personally I'd hardwire the consoles and let the laptops run wireless.. from then on weather it runs happy depends on how you and fellow householders use/abuse it. Red Phoenix 24.12.2010, 01:49 depends on where the hard wired stuff are mate, but I agree with the rest of the party keep it simple mate robbo0070 24.12.2010, 03:28 i run 10meg vm hardwired to nearly every room in house 7 rooms in total using router to feed 1 room and 8 port switch up stairs which runs other 6 no probs at all 2 xboxs 1 playstation 4 computers find wired better for streaming movies from nas drive Over carl 24.12.2010, 05:01 Wifi's ok for light browsing, for heavy downloading you wanna wired connection. I agree, should be ok with virgin supplied router. If you really feel like messing around you could see if you are lucky enough to be given one that can be reflashed with dd-wrt. This gives you a whole plethora of features from the router, but I found navigating the gui was painfully slow. I wouldn't bother looking to replace the router unless you have problems, as I doubt the cheaper ones will even handle 50mb throughput. molx1 31.12.2010, 05:26 Thanks for the help guys. Haven't got the virgin router but will enquire about it and plan out hardwiring the consoles. ![]() 96fauj 31.12.2010, 11:00 You could always pickup a decent Netgear cable from pcworld or something pal, they cost a good 80 quid but they are solid and do the job well. Only spend money though if your current equipment doesn't do your job well and your wireless isn't fast enough etc. Possy_99 31.12.2010, 11:24 I'd ring virmin they might hook you up with one of theirs. Unless you live in a very large house (long distance from router) then just stick with the bog standard equipment.. ?30/40 range of routers if you need to buy from shops - anything more will probably be a waste of money. |
