dpSparhawk 31.03.2009, 07:04 Guys, I'd strongly recommend you all check your bank accounts for any unusual transactions to O2(UK)LTD PREPAY SLOUGH. or similar. I check mine every night and tonight I noticed a transaction for ?30 to O2. I don't own any, and have never owned any O2 phones. Mine is a contract Orange phone. I also have an authorised transaction pending for ?1.52 to i-tunes. I don't own an i-pod products OR have an i-tunes account. This is mentioned in the thread link below.
A quick google shows that this scam is rife and widespread.
....
It appears it could be a result of using pre-pay petrol pumps and possibly a company called Vistaprint. Both of which I have used (Petrol pumps regularly)
Judging by the amount of people on MSE in the above thread whom have reported the same thing happening to them, chances are someone here has been hit with it and not realised.
I called the bank immediately and they've stopped the card and lodged a fraud complaint for me.
Here's another web site detailing this fraud issue .... Spennyboy 31.03.2009, 10:38 phone top ups, itunes, vista print, charity donations etc etc
All that stuff is just 'tester' transaction to make sure your card is live and proof to those buying your information that the card is live.
Your lucky you caught it - another day or 2 and the big hit would have been made. Not to mention transactions from EasyJet and Ryan air appearing on credit cards from Abbey issued via MBNA. Basically always use a credit card that covers you for fraud. Exactly this same item came through on my GF's card - confusing thing is we are both O2 customers AND live quite near Slough, but got the amount refunded and a new card issued - took a little longer than it should have though Don't know if the OPs account was Abbey, but from info. from my friends and colleagues, Abbey accounts seem to be compromised more than any other. I wouldn't have one of their accounts if they paid me.
W. Roach-Rampino 31.03.2009, 13:26 I believe another common "tester" transaction is buying lottery tickets on the card. I believe another common "tester" transaction is buying lottery tickets on the card.
I thought lottery sales were cash only. All the terminals I've seen say cash only anyway. Clubber Lang 31.03.2009, 13:50 I thought lottery sales were cash only. All the terminals I've seen say cash only anyway. Not anymore, I have bought lottery cards with my debit card. soulassassin 31.03.2009, 13:59 Ive had this done to me twice now and just got refunded yesterday for one. I didnt cancel the card for the 1st one (last november (ish)). But got a replacement card last month anyway. Then another one came off my old card that was supposed to be cancelled a few weeks ago coincidently the card expiry date was two days after the second attempt. Personally I think its stolen card details from somewhere, Ive only got my details on two things now and changed or cancelled them on everything else, playstation network, play.com etc etc. Not anymore, I have bought lottery cards with my debit card.
Just shows how long it's been since I bought a lottery ticket. dpSparhawk 31.03.2009, 15:22 Yeah, I'm pleased I caught it. Avoided the account being wiped. I'm with Orange (contract) so the O2 transaction stuck out like a sore thumb.
The bank isn't abbey or halifax and hasn't been mentioned in the thread I posted anywhere. I'm thinking petrol pump or vista print.
I think I'll enquire about the fraud protection on the card. No doubt there's a charge for that. aloogobee 31.03.2009, 17:03 Used to work for barclays call centre and these O2 transactions were common. used to get people ringing about them all the time. Vodafone is another one. Another common one was tesco petrol pumps, as you can just put your card in at the pump on some of them (although i think theyve stopped this now). I personally believe this to be the result of offshore call centres. A quick search on the internet for the purchase of credit card details and it always leads to some indians that work at call centres.. Barclays knew this was going on but they lie to keep it under wraps cos they dont really give a damn as long as its not theyre pocket thats lighter... dpSparhawk 31.03.2009, 17:26 Tesco still do the pay at the pump service. Previously you'd put your card in, take it ou, fuel up and put the card back in to complete the transaction. No pin required.
The new ones now have a pin keypad. You put your card in, enter your pin, once the transaction is authorised, you're allowed to fuel up.
I've just remembered I purchased at Moriss Photographic however I've used them a few times before with no problems. I'd be more inclined to think either VistaPrint (from whom we got calendars done before christmas), The fuel pumps or maybe the 3rd party seller on Amazon. Happened to me a week or so before Xmas, this was with Vodafone though. Took nearly 200 out of my account. Managed to catch it couple before my big wage went in for Xmas. Over carl 31.03.2009, 21:11 I believe another common "tester" transaction is buying lottery tickets on the card. Phone boxes were another one as the cunts had zero risk of getting clocked. Probably a good thing there aren't any phone boxes left Similar Threads
