I would reccomend you get a SATA HDD as they are nice and fast, but a bit fiddly to set up sometimes.

This will leave your 2 IDE ports free. Connect 1 CD Drive to each port for a faster transfer rate.

first thing to try is look at the software installed by the soundcard and make sure it is still set to 4.1.

The software might have a sound test option that is worth trying.

Also try unplugging and reinserting the 3.5 jack into the soundcarda few ...

Windows has the wonderful ability to turn off things to save power like monitors, hard drives and network cards.

Have a look under the network card settings and look for the option that lets windows turn off network card to save power.

I suggest deleting any save game you may have for the game.
Had a problem with Unreal Championship original where it would lock up part way through loading. Deleted the saves and it now works. This was an original booted with the mod chip on or off.

Double check that your PC Network card is a 10/100 compatible card.

Then you need to go through all the wonderful network settings to make sure it is not this that is limiting your card to 10 mb instead of 100 mb
