So if the problem/solution resides in ROM10 (as per your log), how is it that I am effected in the first place and sorted by a manual update ?

Not sure if you've done/tried this or not but I bought a Scart to Component cable for the box. Then in the Video settings on the dbox I swapped to YUV + CVBS output. This improved the quality of the dbox image on my 42" Vieira quite a bit.
